Ad-hoc Windows Server Backup to External Drive

Step 1 – Open the Windows Server Backup application
Click start, type Windows Server & click the application

Select Backup Once in the Windows Server application

Step 2 – Select Backup Once in the Windows Server application
Click the Backup Once… option on the actions menu.

Click on the Different options option on the Backup Options screen & then click next.

 Select Custom on the Select Backup Configuration screen

Step 5 – Select Add Items on the Select Items for Backup screen
Click on the Add Items button on the Select Items for Backup screen.

Step 6 – Select the required data on the Select Items screen
Click in the checkbox next to the data you would like to back up & then click OK.

Step 7 – If backing up a drive. Open the Advanced Settings screen from the Select Items for Backup screen
Click on the Advanced Settings button on the Select Items for Backup screen.

Step 8 – Add Exclusions to the Advanced Settings screen
Click the Add Exclusion button on the Advanced Settings menu

Expand the drive & select the System Volume Information folder then click OK.

Click the Add Exclusion button again, expand the drive again, select the $RECYCLE.BIN folder & then click OK.

Click OK on the Advanced Settings menu.

Step 9 – Select Local drives on the Specify Destination Type screen
Click next on the Specify Destination Type screen (Local drives should be selected as default).

Step 10 – Select the external drive on the Select Backup Destination screen
Change the Backup destination field to external drive using the dropdown menu & then click next.

Step 11 – Confirm the Backup Details & click Backup
Check the Confirmation screen & then click Backup

Step 12 – Backup Completed
Once the backup is complete this screen will be displayed.

Click Close & then exit the Windows Server Backup application.
